Chapter 106: Chapter 106

They took turns taking their baths behind a screen.

Hua Ren had bathed first, steam still clinging to his pale skin as he slipped into a simple robe, loose and comfortable enough for sleep. He stood still for a moment, listening for sounds beyond the rain, anything, but there was none besides that of the innkeeper and the stable boy. He let out a sigh of relief and sat on the bed, cracking his neck. He was glad no one was following them. He really didn’t feel like getting into a fight. Especially in the rain.

Sheng Fei returned from his turn, hair still damp, loose strands clinging to his temples. His black robes clung to him in places, outlining the hard planes of his body.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, his frame built by muscles honed lean and defined, like those of a warrior who relied on his body as much as his blade. His chest stretched the fabric when he moved, his arms sculpted, his waist narrow, tapering down with the athletic sharpness of someone disciplined, efficient, unshakably strong.

Hua Ren’s heart stuttered, then picked up pace, beating fast and uneven in his chest. His eyes widened, and before he could stop it, a rush of images from those nights surged in.

He remembered skin against skin, the heat of Sheng Fei’s body pressed over his, the sound of his voice low and ragged in his ear.

The memory made his throat tighten. Hua Ren tore his gaze away sharply, his face angled down, the corners of his ears hot. He swallowed, hard, willing the tremor in his chest to quiet. He wondered, was he going to be able to fall asleep at all?

Sheng Fei smiled to himself when he saw Hua Ren quickly look away. He didn’t bother teasing the general this time and just carried a bundle of blankets borrowed from the innkeeper.

He spread them out against the far wall, fashioning a makeshift bed.

“You take the bed,” he said to Hua Ren. “I’ll sleep here.”

Hua Ren looked at him from where he sat on the edge of the mattress but he didn’t argue. He completely agreed that distance was safer. If Sheng Fei should lay beside him, he wasn’t sure he would be able to control himself this time. It was bad enough that they were in the same room and he could smell Sheng Fei’s pheromones. Though, it was just a little.

He could still feel the strong pull between them, the need to be beside the Alpha rising steadily but he forcefully ignored it.

The lamps went out with a soft breath, shadows falling over the room. Sheng Fei stretched out on the floor, arm tucked behind his head. Hua Ren laid down as well, eyes fixed on the dark ceiling, listening to the muffled rain outside.

Minutes passed.

The quiet should have been soothing, but it wasn’t. They quickly realised that being left to their own thoughts felt much much worse. No matter how hard Hua Ren tried to think of anything else, the rebel always popped into his mind.

And as for the rebel in question, well, he felt like he was being tortured. In fact, he felt that actual torture would be even better than what he was going through.

Sheng Fei shifted once. Twice. Then again, a restless turn of blankets that grated against the floorboards. No matter what he did, he could not sleep. The moment he shut his eyes, Hua Ren invaded his mind. He would see those white eyes staring up at him, glimmering desperate with need. One that as an Alpha, he could not ignore.

His lower body throbbed insistently, a hot, aching pulse that refused to be ignored and he groaned, turning again, willing it to go down but then he pictured Hua Ren’s lips, moist and pink, parted in that breathless way that stripped him of reason, beckoning him to lick them, to suck them until they turned red. He groaned softly and turned again.

His fingers twitched with the urge to reach out, to touch what was his, to pull his Omega close and remind him who he belonged to.

Hua Ren’s heat was over days ago and his rut too. So why was Hua Ren plaguing him so?

Was this what it meant to mark an Omega? This unrelenting pull, this agony of distance even when only a few steps separated them?

Having Hua Ren here, within reach yet untouchable, was like pressing fire to his skin. His body screamed for him, every nerve sharpened to his scent, every instinct demanding he close the space between them.

Sheng Fei groaned under his breath, rolling again, but it was useless. There was no way he could sleep—not with his Omega lying in the same room, warm and close, yet forbidden to him.

Hua Ren pulled the sheet up to his chest, jaw tightening in annoyance. Couldn’t the rebel stay put? His movements weren’t allowing him to fall asleep.

He told himself to ignore it. To just sleep but then he heard movement. It was Sheng Fei rising.

Hua Ren’s grip tightened on the sheet, his muscles tensing. Was Sheng Fei going to join him in bed, thinking he was asleep already? His heart beat faster, half-expecting the weight of another body sinking into the bed. He was anticipating it but at the same time, dreading it.

Seconds dragged but nothing happened.

Curious, he slowly parted his lashes, just enough to see.

Sheng Fei wasn’t at the bed. He was standing by the window, his tall frame outlined faintly by the pale silver glow of the moon. His gaze was fixed outside, silent, as if searching the night for something beyond the reach of his hands.

Hua Ren pushed himself up. “Can’t sleep?”

Sheng Fei’s lower parts began to throb again. He turned his head, the moonlight catching his golden eyes then gave a short nod. “Go back to bed,” he murmured.

Hua Ren’s heart began to race. Was Sheng Fei’s voice always this sexy? It was calm, but with a deep and rough undertone which scratched at his heart.

“You need to sleep,” he said at last. “You’ll need your strength for tomorrow.”

Sheng Fei let out a low unbothered chuckle. “Don’t worry about me. I once went twelve days without sleep and I was just fine. I’ll be fine this time too.”
