Chapter 105: Chapter 105

Hua Ren’s fingers twitched at his side and Sheng Fei let out a slow breath. His voice, when he finally spoke again, was low and hoarse. “You have no idea how hard it is not to kiss you right now.”

Hua Ren’s breath caught in his throat.

Then— knock, knock.

Sheng Fei exhaled and stepped back, just enough for both of them to breathe again. He straightened, having mixed feelings about the interruption. He had wanted to see what Hua Ren would do or say.

He opened the door and the innkeeper entered with a wooden tray balanced carefully in his hands. The scent of hot broth and steamed buns quickly filled the room.

“Here’s your food,” the old man said, setting the tray on the table. “The water will be ready in a little while. Please enjoy.”

Sheng Fei gave the innkeeper a nod, walking him to the door. As the man turned to leave, Sheng Fei slipped a few extra coins into his hand. The innkeeper’s eyes widened in gratitude, and he bowed before closing the door softly behind him. He wished the Alpha good luck. He had already helped him enough. Now it was all up to him to catch his pretty omega.

When Sheng Fei turned back, Hua Ren was already seated at the table, holding a spoon. His expression was studiously calm, as if they didn’t just have a moment. Though, the faint colour on his ears betrayed him.

“Food’s getting cold,” he muttered, eyes fixed on the steaming bowl before him. “Hurry up or I’ll start eating without you.”

Sheng Fei’s lips curved faintly as he joined him. “Should we go over our plan one more time?”

Hua Ren nodded. It was better to talk. That way, he won’t keep thinking about Sheng Fei in other ways.

The storm broke hard over Water River Town. Rain hammered the rooftops, pouring down the wooden beams and muddying the streets. Thunder rumbled in the distance, low and guttural, before a flash of lightning split the sky wide open.

The guards at the gate flinched when a loud bang echoed through the storm. Someone was pounding against the gate. The men exchanged a wary glance before pulling it open.

Dark-cloaked riders sat on their horses before the gate and at the head of them all, astride a silver-gray stallion, was a woman.

Lightning struck again, washing her in white light — a sharp, angular face, eyes cold and gleaming beneath the rim of her helm.

The guards stumbled back in fear as she urged her horse forward.

“Where’s your Chief?” she asked, her voice carrying clearly through the downpour. It was deep and curt, sending chills down their spines. The could tell that the woman was a top-tier Alpha.

“I—I’ll take you to him,” one of them stammered.

Moments later, they were led into the Chief’s home. He greeted them stiffly, ushering them inside. The woman sat on a wodden chair and removed her helmet, placing it on the table with a dull thud.

The Chief quickly poured her some hot tea and stood to the side, unsure of what to do or say.

Her icy gaze swept the modest home before settling on the Chief. “Where is your wife?” she asked.

The Chief blinked, startled. “She… she went to visit a friend with our children. When the rain began, they must have chosen to stay the night there.”

The woman hummed in thought, studying the Chief for a while but he didn’t say more so she nodded. She did not touch the tea, instead, she unrolled a scroll and placed it before on the table before him.

“Have you seen them?” she asked.

Two familiar portraits stared up from the parchment.

The Chief’s brows drew together as he studied the faces. His fingers tapped nervously against his side.

“No… I don’t think so.”

Her eyes narrowed, and for the first time, the air shifted.

It was subtle at first, the faintest prickle at the edge of the Chief’s senses. Then it pressed harder, heavier, until his lungs felt tight and his throat dry. He fell to his knees, clutching his neck as he in pain. He realised that she must be a top-teir Alpha. She was using her pheromones to suppress him.

He began to tremble and sweat, coughing as he tried to get some air into his lungs.

She snapped her fingers and one of the soldiers marched forward. He yanked the Chief up by his collar, pressed his head hard unto the table and stabbed a dagger right close to his head.

“Think harder, Chief.” the woman said.

The Chief swallowed, his voice rough. “I really don’t know them!”

The soldier raised his dagger.

“Wait! Wait! I’m not done!” the Chief cried. “I don’t know them but… two strangers came into this town a week ago and they helped us… with the bandits. But I can’t say if they were the ones.”

The soldier looked at their leader who waved at him to let the Chief go. She also retracted her pheromones and then took a sip of the tea. She gave a hum of surprise. “Ginger. How did you know I like ginger?”

The Chief stood, coughing slightly. “I-Its raining so I just figured-”

“Tell me more about them.” She said, cutting him off. “The strangers who helped you. Were they Alphas? Omegas? Perhaps an Alpha and an Omega?”

“They… they were both Alphas.” The Chief answered. “They subdued the bandits very easily. No omega can do that.”

The woman shared a look with her soldiers then nodded to the Chief. “Go on.”

“One wore a veiled hat,” he said. “I couldn’t see his face. The other had a mask.”

Her gaze sharpened. “And where did they go?”

“I don’t know but they mentioned Frost Forest Village. It’s the closest town from here.”

She leaned back, satisfied. “Alright. We’ll leave a soldier behind. If anything else comes to mind, tell him.”

The Chief nodded and she rose, her soldiers following as they filed back into the storm.

At the gate, she paused and turned to one of them. “You will remain. Watch the town closely. If they are still hiding here, find them but do not engage or your poor mother will be burying her only son by the end of this mission.”

The soldier bowed his head. “And if there’s nothing, Commander?”

She looked at him, her expression calm. “Then the fugitives have already tainted this place. Burn it down.”

The guards stiffened.

She smiled, thin and cruel. “If they won’t surrender to our beloved Emperor, then we’ll destroy them along with everyone else they’ve saved.”
