Chapter 104: Chapter 104

Sheng Fei couldn’t help but smile as he stepped into the room. He could tell why the old man winked at a glance. The old man surely knew how to take advantage of a good opportunity.

Hua Ren stepped into the room and removed his hat, checking if the small wooden table by the wall was clean before setting it carefully. The room was plain, with one window facing the dirt road below. Outside, rain lashed against the shutters, blurring the world in gray streaks.

The bed was narrow and old, its wooden frame showing nicks and scratches, but at least the sheets were freshly laundered. A worn, stained rug sprawled across the floor, and a rickety table with two chairs stood by the side.

Hua Ren’s brows drew together. He had never stayed in such conditions before—not even during battles, where as a general he was always afforded the best tents, bedding, and comforts.

Not to forget that he was born in wealth which had shaped him into someone who never lacked fine accommodations. Standing here now, he felt out of place, the shabby room pressing against his senses in quiet discomfort.

He turned his head and found Sheng Fei moving about with an ease that startled him. The man shrugged off his outer robe and set it on the chair, rolling his shoulders as though he were entirely at home. He sat at the edge of the bed without hesitation, stretching his legs out with a sigh.

Hua Ren was truly surprised. Sheng Fei acted so natural, as if the inn, with its cracked walls and stale air, were nothing unusual to him. He wondered what Sheng Fei had gone through to live so easily in a place like this. He was even finding it hard to sit anywhere.

Sheng Fei felt Hua Ren’s gaze on him and looked up, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth—calm, teasing, the kind that always unsettled Hua Ren.

Caught staring, Hua Ren blinked quickly and furrowed his brows. “What?” he asked, voice clipped, as though he hadn’t been doing anything at all.

Sheng Fei rose smoothly from the bed, his golden eyes gleaming as he walked towards Hua Ren. “You’ve been staring at me since we entered, general,” he said, his tone low, carrying a teasing edge. “If you keep looking at me like this, I’ll start to think you want something from me.”

Heat rushed up Hua Ren’s neck at the insinuation. He scowled, trying to mask the sudden flush with irritation. “Say something like that again and I’ll—”

The words caught in his throat for he suddenly realized that Sheng Fei was standing too close. So close that he could smell that familiar scent of sage. It made the crescent mark on his neck thrum, pulsing with a heat that spread through his veins.

He instinctively took a step back, wanting to put some distance between them so he could find his words but Sheng Fei followed.

He took another step back but Sheng Fei followed again until Hua Ren’s back met the wall.

Sheng Fei stopped there, leaving the smallest space between them, close enough for Hua Ren to feel his warmth, to feel the coolness of his breath against his lips, close enough to set his heart hammering.

They just stood there, golden eyes locked with storm-grey, the silence between them heavy and charged.

Hua Ren’s breath quickened, his mind blanking under the weight of Sheng Fei’s nearness. The mark flared, heat coiling low and sharp in his gut. His lips parted but he could not bring himself to utter a single word. Nothing at all came to his mind.

He began to panic. Why was he feeling this way now? He hadn’t perceived Sheng Fei’s pheromones for a while so he thought everything was over and he was back to normal. Why did he feel this way now? Why did he feel so drawn to him? Was it because of the mark?

Sheng Fei tilted his head slightly, noting the panic in his omega’s eyes. He raised a hand to Hua Ren’s cheek, with the intent to comfort him but then he saw the way Hua Ren stiffened. The general even curled his fist, ready to attack.

He dropped his hand, not wanting to get hit again. He knew Hua Ren never used his full strength to hit him but it didn’t mean that it didn’t hurt.

“Why are you afraid?” he asked, voice quieter now, stripped of all the teasing and edged with something more sincere. He really wanted to know.

Hua Ren didn’t reply. He just raised a brow and gave Sheng Fei a pointed look. Wasn’t it obvious?

Sheng Fei chuckled softly. “Don’t be. Your heat has passed. We’re both in control so I won’t touch you… not unless you want me to.”

And that was exactly what Hua Ren was trying to fight. The urge to ask Sheng Fei to touch him. The need to feel his heated palm caress his skin again.

Hua Ren swallowed hard, throat working as the crescent mark on his neck flared warm beneath his collar, responding instinctively to Sheng Fei’s nearness. He felt it pulse in time with his heartbeat, each throb sending sparks through his veins.

He blamed the mark for making him feel this way. He was a normal omega before, oblivious to the Alpha-omega connection. Now, with the mark, he was wanting things he would never want before.

He lifted his eyes, and they met Sheng Fei’s—golden, luminous, swirling like molten metal caught in sunlight. The longer Hua Ren stared, the more he felt himself being pulled under, as if those eyes were an endless pool of fire and honey. His mind struggled to focus, but his body betrayed him, heat rising everywhere, threatening to consume him.

Sheng Fei wasn’t unaffected either. His gaze dropped, almost against his will, lingering on Hua Ren’s lips. They looked soft—too soft for a general, a warlord who had commanded armies and carved victories on battlefields. Sheng Fei remembered vividly how they had tasted before. In fact, he could never forget. They tasted shockingly sweet, like a forbidden fruit he had no right to touch but couldn’t forget.

Who would believe that a fierce omega like this, could taste that way?

Sheng Fei’s chest tightened. Every instinct in him screamed to close the distance, to claim those lips again, to surrender to the bond that tugged at them both. But he held still, his breath warm against Hua Ren’s skin, fighting his own urge with iron restraint. He wasn’t going to be like his stupid brother, trying to take an omega against his will.

The mark between them thrummed louder. They could feel it, winding them together like threads of fire they both refused to grasp.
