Chapter 172: Perk Selection

[Perk selection confirmed]

[Resource Mapping assigned to ZeroOne Sovereign]

[Total Number of perks left: 9]

The Voice of The World was still speaking when Zephyr saw a separate panel branch out from his existing ranking panel by the side.

A glowing blue topographical map took up the entire second panel, giving him an overhead view of the desert sector in its entirety, along with various resource locations.

All the large oases were clearly represented on the map along with the resources they held.

Zephyr frowned slightly as he scanned the whole map.

There were way more resources than he’d ever thought would be available in a desert like this. Most of which seemed to be underground.

”Damn… Nothing is gonna be easy here, huh?” He muttered under his breath.

Basically all the resource locations had a monster lair right next to them underground.

Even the large oases were not exempt from this. There was at least a monster lair right beneath every single one of them.

That meant even those at the oases weren’t safe. Whatever safety they thought they had now was only for the time being.

Who knew when there was going to be a breakout…

The more he scanned, the more he was thankful he made the choice to select Resource Mapping.

The ’Expanded Champion Profiles’ had really called to him too, but at the end of the day he had chosen what was vital to him.

He realized that having knowledge of all resources points in the desert was way more beneficial than having inside knowledge of every other champion.

Coupled with the fact that even if the Rank No 2: Queen of The Dunes chose the Expanded Champion Profiles perk, she still couldn’t know what perk he actually chose, it was a no-brainer.

Besides just resources alone, the fact that he could see all the monster lairs already gave him an idea of how things could eventually play out in the long run in this convergence trial.

There were the small lairs that he was sure some champions might’ve stumbled on already, and there were other very large lairs that he could tell would not be found until they were well into the trial.

Case in point, one of them right on the western border he was headed. It was represented on the map as a black patch underground, with a huge question mark right on top.

It was the largest monster lair by far, and looked like it even cut into the next sector too. More than half of it was split by the demarcating mark of the border.

A couple of small lairs littered its surroundings, and along with it, food sources.

He had no idea what these food sources might look like, but that was what was displayed on the resource map.

”Well, that’s one worry out of the way…” Zephyr mused, before chuckling lightly. “Queen of The Dunes should have gotten the notice by now… I wonder which perk she’ll choose.”

From her domineering name, he was fairly certain she would go with the Expanded Champion Profiles if only to know who ZeroOne Sovereign, who had usurped her, was.

And if she didn’t choose it, then there was no way it would remain past the top five.

The same could be said for a few other perks on the list too.

Zephyr pulled up the ranking panel again, carefully checking the top ten to see those who would be getting perks alongside him.

These ten, including him, seemed to have gained some semblance of stability in their ranking.

Zephyr could see that even down to the fifteenth rank, there weren’t any changes within the span of when he’d had the ranking panel open.

The changes just below that were also not much, and not as frequent. The rank where changes started to get really frequent was from the twenty-four mark. Champions were changing positions every few seconds as Zephyr watched.

But they weren’t his concern. The top ten were.

These were the champions that would have knowledge of perks.

They would know that perks exist, and that only the top ten have knowledge of these perks.

Whether or not this knowledge would spread was purely up to the discretion of each of them, so Zephyr hoped they weren’t loose-lipped.

He looked at the No.9 and 10 ranked champions, Braddox and Xyrie. They were the closest to leaving the top ten…

The Voice of The World had stated that once a champion was booted off the top ten ranks, even for a moment, their perk would be revoked.

And that meant the newcomer would claim their perk instead.

”Sheesh…” Zephyr whistled.

This trial wasn’t giving them anything for free. If they wanted to continue having the benefit of their perks, they had to fight even harder than others to keep their spots.

The only exception to this rule would be Zephyr.

Of all the perks that could be chosen, only his perk – Resource Mapping, looked to be one-time use… at least for him personally.

Because of his enhanced memory and Aegis’ ability to save images, Zephyr could discard this perk immediately after committing all the locations to memory.

Even if he got booted off the top ten rankings, he would still retain the knowledge of all the resource locations…

…But this was something he was not willing to do.

At this point, none of the top ten ranked champions beside him had any knowledge of ’Resource Mapping’ or its capabilities, and Zephyr intended to keep it that way for the rest of the trial.

So long as he never got booted off the top ten ranks, he would always retain this perk, leaving the other champions to always wonder what it was that he got.

[Perk Selection Complete]

[All Rank 1–10 champions have successfully chosen perks]

[Perk distribution phase concluded]

”Huh…?” Zephyr blinked. He hadn’t even noticed how long he’d been standing there, overthinking his choice like he had all the time in the world. By the time he finally looked up again, it was already over.

”This means someone has selected Expanded Champion Profiles already…”

For a short moment, he felt unwilling, but he just dragged a hand down his face and forced the thought away.

”…Whatever,” he muttered. “Too late to do anything about it now.”

He turned away from the spot, refocusing his mind. The only thing he could do was push forward.

With his perk, he now had access to everything he needed to establish himself stably.

He focused on his HUD status panel, bringing it up within his view.

Aegis had already added all the locations displayed on the Resource Mapping panel to his own inbuilt panel, so he didn’t have to call up the other panel every time he wanted to use it.

He selected one of the nearest food sources that surrounded the major monster lair at the western border and immediately started towards it at full tilt…

Somewhere In The Desert Sector…

[Perk Selection Confirmed]

[Oasis Priority Notice assigned to Braddox]

Braddox’s eyes flickered in excitement for a short moment before he quickly schooled his expression. Moonlight Sage was negotiating with one of the other major faction leaders a few steps away from him.

The faction had the titan variant on their side, so despite the fact that Braddox – ranked No.9, and Moonlight Sage – now ranked No.16 were in a faction together, they still had to acknowledge the other faction… The titan variant’s strength was not to be taken lightly.

He alone had mowed down dozens of their faction members…

Despite the fact that Braddox was the main leader of his faction, he knew he didn’t have the wit to handle negotiations, so he had left it up to Moonlight Sage.

The guy was smooth with words and had a way with people…

Coupled with his keen senses, he was a formidable character.

Even now, as though he could sense the change in Braddox’s expression, he turned back just as the Voice of The World’s prompt had appeared within his view, presenting him with two perk choices.

In Braddox’s shock, he had almost given away the fact that something major had just happened.

It took every bit of ’acting’ to keep a straight face as he selected ’Oasis Priority’ quickly.

He didn’t even need to think much about it.

The other choice was Location Compass, which he felt was useless to him. He wasn’t one of those who ventured into the desert, and he didn’t see himself doing so until it became necessary.

Oasis Priority on the other hand, besides its general purpose, it could help him know when faction leaders within his current oasis were trying to play smart…

He blankly stared at Moonlight Sage who was also looking at him with a lazy smile on his face.

I fucken hate this guy… Braddox nodded at him before turning away as naturally as he could like he had other ’faction things’ to do…

But in reality he just wanted to explore this perk that he had gotten.
