Chapter 171: Priority Privilege

”This isn’t a game…” Zephyr muttered solemnly as he watched the names scroll by. A hundred and sixty thousand people had just died…

Most of them had just been yanked from their various lives without any prior idea as to what a convergence was.

They became champions taxed with the heavy responsibility of representing their worlds…

And now they were dead…

Zephyr grimaced at the number.

One had to know that this was only from his sector. What he now knew to be Sector 6.

There were eleven others just like his… And that meant even more fallen champions…

The scrolling names finally came to a stop after a few minutes, with Zephyr observing a moment of silence the whole time it was.

[Notice: Day 1 Concluded.]

[Total number of Sector 6 champions at start: 1,470,332]

”Huh? Perks…?” Zephyr muttered in confusion.

[Details of Rank 1: ZeroOne Sovereign’s choice will not be known to Rank No 2: Queen of The Dunes.]

[Rank No 2: Queen of The Dunes would only get nine perks displayed as options. Subsequent ranks would follow the same priority rules.]

[This notice would only be seen by ranks 1-10]

[Perk becomes invalid for the champion immediately they exit the top 10 rank]

”…”

Zephyr’s heartbeat was literally drumming in his chest as the Voice of The World listed out the perks and explained their uses.

He never expected anything like this in the first place, so the fact that there were even perks took him fully by surprise.

The details of some of the perks were very enticing. Especially for him that wanted to keep a low profile in the first place.

Zephyr delved straight into analyzing the pros and cons of each, and right off the bat, he discarded a few of them.

The first to go was ’Location Compass’. Zephyr already had Aegis to help with that.

Right now he had his own ’location compass’ embedded in his ever-present HUD status panel that displayed basic but vital information for him to see at all times.

It was right there at the bottom of his view for him to focus on whenever he needed. So that was the first obvious perk to be discarded.

The second was ’Champion Locator’.

Zephyr already had enhanced senses to pick up on the traces of any nearby enemy… While also knowing exactly where they were.

With the champion locator perk, the user couldn’t even know where exactly the enemy was within the 7-mile radius (11km) it allowed.

The only thing it had better than Zephyr was the range. Zephyr couldn’t sense as far as that…

He could surely see that far if high up enough, but on normal ground level, he was limited by the horizon, and his ears couldn’t pick up minute sounds with enough clarity from that far.

The next to go was ’Archive Access’. He could see how it could be beneficial in some way…

But it was only in very specific scenarios.

Take for example he was after a particular champion, and he already knew their method of killing. He could use this perk to have a broad, but detailed idea of where the champion might be…

That wasn’t a priority for him at the moment.

In fact, he didn’t see himself having a reason to use something like that.

He recognized the danger of it though…

One of the current top 10 was going to select this. And if they somehow knew his pattern of killing enemies, they may be able to track down his position with the perk.

”Note to self… switch up your battling style regularly…” Zephyr muttered lightly before moving on to the rest of the perks.

The seven remaining were perks that looked appealing to him in some way. But since he could only pick one, he had to sort through them carefully to make the best choice for his present situation.

’Environmental Log’ would be very beneficial for survival and planning ahead.

It would help him know when things like the sandstorm that had just happened were incoming even before they were close to his position, giving him a proper advantage over other champions.

’Cross-Sector Rankings’ was very straightforward. It would allow him to look into the rankings of every other sector and know who to be wary of for the future.

He was sure the sector restrictions were eventually going to be lifted… But not now.

So this one, while somewhat enticing, could easily be discarded for now too.

’Oasis Priority Notice’ was the next Zephyr considered. It would allow him to know all the leaders of each of the large oases in Sector 6, giving him the knowledge of which to avoid and which could be somewhat approachable when need be.

If he chose this perk, he would immediately confirm the location of Queen of The Dunes, Alyra Ryvelin, and that Lord guy… Though he was still of the opinion that they were in the north.

The perk would also allow him to know when power changed hands in each of the large oases. How he could make use of the information may not be evident at the moment, but he was sure it could prove useful at some point. So he kept this perk in mind.

There were still others that were better though.

Expanded Champion Profiles, Status Concealment, Sector Overview, and Resource Mapping.

These four were the perks that captured his attention the most.

He could only choose one perk. So the fact that some of the other top ten rankers would get one of these bothered him.

Starting with Expanded Champion Profiles.

Zephyr was not comfortable with the idea of someone having access to in-depth information about him… From his kills, total number of points, down to even his true name.

That sort of access was too much. Besides knowing every single champion in a more personal way, there were still hidden benefits that came with this perk… One of them being the point grading system.

The Voice of The World had never revealed the specifics of the point grading system with which they were all ranked, and yet whoever chose this perk would be able to see it in full.

Coupled with the knowledge of ’total number of kills’ that they would have on every champion, they could form an idea of what was worth more to kill in the whole sector.

Zephyr was already sure now that there had to be other creatures here that were worth points too… besides the monstrous worm he’d fought with.

So, when these creatures were revealed to all, this person would know what and what not to waste their effort on… Basically helping them forge their way to the top faster.

It was a perk that he was seriously considering taking, if only to prevent someone else from getting it.

But the saving grace was Status Concealment…

It was the only direct counter to the intrusive capability of the ’Expanded Champion Profiles’ perk.

This was its only use, and the only reason it had even made his top list.

He put both of them on hold and moved to the last two.

Resource Mapping and Sector Overview.

They were both very logical selection choices for him based on his current survival needs.

The first addressed his need for food, water, and other resources he might need. While the other addressed safety.

One had to remember that Zephyr was moving towards the western border of the desert where, while he could still use magic to get water from the air, food would pose a major problem.

Selecting the ’Resource Mapping’ perk would solve this issue for him cleanly.

He would always know where the closest source of food and resources were at all times, no matter what part of the desert he was.

’Sector Overview’ on the other hand also appealed to him greatly. It would help him know where the dangerous hotspots of battles were at all times, champion populated areas, trends…

It would give him information he needed to know to tread through the desert carefully.

For him that wanted to keep a low profile, this looked like a very useful perk.

”Ughh…” Zephyr let out an an exasperated sigh, running a hand through his hair.

”This is difficult…”

For some of the perks, it wasn’t about what he chose, but rather, what he wouldn’t that bothered him.

He analyzed everything carefully, looking at the perk benefits he could do without, or could substitute with his own effort, and those he couldn’t.

He stood there for a long time, comparing and contrasting… weighing the pros and cons…

Until eventually, with a grimace on his face, he made the move to select a perk…
