Chapter 391: What are you doing, Lord Kael?

“Stand the wall, hold the line~”

Kael sang loudly as he stood on Lavinia’s side, holding her hand.

“Never let the fire die~~”

Lavinia completed the lyrics as she danced with him in perfect rhythm.

One stomp, two stomps, turn. One stomp, two stomps, clap. The movements that had been stiff and awkward earlier now flowed easily, their boots hitting the stone in sync with the rest of the Velmourns.

They had blended in quite well; they were even singing the lyrics together with the rest. It looked like they had been with the group for years.

The rest of the Velmourns didn’t seem uncomfortable around Lavinia either. Everything seemed perfect.

“If we fall, if we break—”

Kael raised his voice, his deep, steady tone making it clear that he had never sung this before, but he had already learned the pattern.

“Let the mountain hear our cry~”

Lavinia’s voice, on the other hand, was much softer as she followed each verse without missing a beat.

“Velmourn blood, Velmourn bone, we are stone until the end—”

Boots pounded on stone, shaking loose bits of early frost that had begun setting in.

Kael glanced at Lavinia. Her eyes were fixed on the firelight, her voice steady as she sang the last line with the rest.

“We are stone until the end.”

The circle moved together, bodies swaying and stomping in perfect time. Some clapped, others spun in quick half-turns before stepping back in. Even the Matriarch, standing at the far side, nodded faintly with the beat.

It was late now. The fires had burned low, their light flickering gold on tired faces. Many Velmourns had already left—everyone had to continue their work tomorrow, so as enjoyable as it was, some still needed one or two hours of sleep.

Of course, the bold ones still remained. The celebration would continue until the sun rose, and they planned to see it through.

One sleepless night wouldn’t put a dent in them anyway!

Yes, these were the brave souls—the bolder ones who wanted to spend more time with Kael and Lavinia.

Kael and Lavinia, as the center of all this attention, couldn’t return either. Honestly, this was the first party Kael was actually enjoying since he came to this world, so he had no plans to go back. Lavinia, while she did enjoy her time in Drakthar, looking back at it, all of it seemed so dull and pretentious—especially now, when she realized the person she loved the most had it in him to betray her.

The people here didn’t seem very accepting of her, but at the very least, they did not hide their emotions and later try to stab her in the back.

This was a much more comfortable environment.

And well, since Kael was here too, the Mage did not mind. As long as Kael seemed to be having fun, she was having fun too!

Both the Hero and the Mage continued to dance with the remaining Velmourns. Their movements were slower now since most of the Velmourns were exhausted.

Their every step showed the long day they had endured, yet none of them stopped.

Kael could see it in them—aching muscles, heavy eyes, worn boots scraping over the stone—and yet, they smiled.

And because they did, Kael continued dancing with them.

“You’ve got it now, Lord Kael!”

A soldier to Kael’s left shouted over the singing, grinning wide.

“Finally,”

Kael replied with a small laugh, turning with the circle.

“Told you—no rules except stomping until it sounds like music!”

Alrisa laughed too.

“Thank you for helping us.”

Lavinia smiled lightly.

“I had no other choice~

It looked like you had never danced before. I couldn’t bear to watch it.”

Alrisa chuckled, staring at Kael as she said those words. Kael chuckled—he remembered the words Lavinia had used before when she came here.

Lavinia’s mouth twitched at those words.

“I will have you know that I have had formal dance training.”

She answered with a snort.

“Oh? Did you now?”

Alrisa’s grin widened.

“Didn’t look like it.”

“The dance I was taught was much more difficult.”

“I doubt that.”

“I’ll teach you and we will see how fast you make progress.”

“I can’t do anything if I have a bad teacher, now can I?”

Alrisa shrugged with a chuckle, and Kael laughed out loud. Lavinia pinched Kael’s hand, and he quickly looked another way.

The rest of the Velmourns laughed at that. They sang another round, their voices blending with the others.

“Stand the wall, hold the line, never let the fire die~

If we fall, if we break, let the mountain hear our cry~

Velmourn blood, Velmourn bone, we are stone until the end~

We are stone until the end~”

The boots struck the ground in perfect unison.

And then, mid-step, Kael’s smile faded.

He missed the next beat. His eyes shifted away from the circle, looking east, where the Velmourns usually stayed.

“What happened?”

Lavinia noticed immediately and asked in a soft breath. She stopped dancing too.

Kael didn’t answer right away. He glanced at Morvain, seeing what she was doing, then grabbed Lavinia’s hand and—

“We need to leave.”

“What happened?”

“Found him.”

Kael spoke, and in an instant, Lavinia’s expression changed.

The two of them rushed to Morvain and—

“Follow us.”

He ordered before he jumped in the air with Lavinia in his arms.

For a moment, Morvain blinked in surprise, confused.

Korvath and Kayden seemed confused too. Morvain, however, quickly came to her senses, summoned her flying beast, and—

“Elders, follow me.

The rest—continue the celebrations.”

Saying those words, she flew away as well.

The Velmourns were confused; the Elders, on the other hand, quickly understood what this was about. So although they were surprised at how quickly all of this was happening, when they recalled that the two of them had been keeping an eye on them at every single point of their lives, they realized that it wasn’t that hard to catch the traitor.

Honestly, at this point, they pitied the traitor instead.

How was the poor guy supposed to fend off beings who watched him ALL the time?

Without waiting, the Elders reacted. Korvath ordered Kayden to take care of things here while the rest flew, following the Matriarch.

…

BANG

The door of a room slammed open so hard it rattled on its hinges.

A startled gasp came from inside as Kael rushed in, Lavinia close behind him, her cape brushing the doorway.

The family inside—a father, a mother, and one child—froze in place. The child sat cross-legged in the corner, head bent over the old stone slate, writing something with a big smile on his face.

His eyes seemed so pure and gentle that it was almost impossible to tell what he was actually doing. His quill moved quickly; everything happened so fast that he hadn’t even reacted to the people who had barged into his house.

Or maybe he did, and his quickened quill was proof of that.

“L-Lord Kael?”

The mother stammered, clutching her shawl tighter.

“What—?”

Kael didn’t answer, neither did Lavinia. They didn’t even look at the parents. Both walked straight across the room, and Kael grabbed the boy’s hand mid-stroke and lifted him in the air.

It was an action that surprised every person in the room, especially the parents. They couldn’t believe what was happening.

“What are you doing, Lord Kael?”

The father demanded, stepping forward. His voice still seemed shaken—he obviously knew Kael wasn’t an opponent he could do anything against.

Especially not after what he had heard about the Dragon God. If he wanted, he could burn him to ashes with just a flick of his finger. In normal circumstances, he would never use such a tone against a being like him.

But when it came to his child, his body moved on its own. If it came down to it, he would take down even the Dragon God if he had to.

Seeing that reaction, Kael frowned.

He slowly adjusted the child and lifted him in his arm in a way that wouldn’t hurt him.

“DRAGON GOD!!”

The child laughed, hugging Kael with a big bright smile on his face. He was a bit surprised and even scared by what had suddenly happened, but when he saw Kael’s face, he couldn’t hold his excitement.

An action that might have calmed the situation but—

“Let the child go, Lord Kael.”

The father spoke.

He had seen how Kael had barged in; whatever it was, it definitely wasn’t friendly. Whatever it was, it could be discussed AFTER his child was standing with him.

Kael narrowed his eyes as he stared at the father. Lavinia, too, seemed somewhat confused by the situation. They didn’t have enough time for Kael to explain the entire situation to her, and honestly, Kael too didn’t know everything.

Imperia had just told him that he needed to stop the child, and the entire time he was flying here, she could only guide him with the direction without explaining the entire story.

Honestly, he was only acting on his complete trust in Imperia but…

Seeing the family’s reaction…

Didn’t they look like the bad people here…?

“Lord Kael, I will say this one last time—let my child go.”

The father spoke as he grabbed his hammer.

And before Kael could react—

“Kael.”

The Matriarch walked in as well.
