Chapter 389: For the Velmourns!

“Mage Lavinia Dragonborn.”

Morvain’s voice echoed throughout the space as she wrapped her cape around Lavinia.

A cold wind swept across, making the mage’s cape float. It was almost as if Ashen Heights itself was welcoming her.

For a moment, Lavinia felt strong. After all, the Velmourn Cape wasn’t just for warmth; it was what represented the Velmourns. Her wearing the cape meant that she would now be seen as one of the Velmourns.

Her long purple hair moved with the wind, a few strands brushing against her cheek before falling back over the fur. The glow from the flames made the color look even richer.

Her violet eyes were steady and sharp, meeting the gaze of anyone who looked her way, prepared to face what was about to come.

Kael stood beside her, and seeing her like this made his heart skip a beat.

But…

The feeling didn’t last long.

It couldn’t.

“A… Dragonborn…?”

After all, the Velmourns were now finally reacting to their Matriarch’s words.

“Did the Matriarch say… Dragonborn…?”

“Don’t be foolish, you must have heard incorrectly.”

“No… I heard the same thing…”

“That can’t be!”

“H-He was right…

Wasim told me that she was a Dragonborn and the Drakthars were here for her, but I didn’t believe it!

So… was that true…?”

“Is she really a Dragonborn…?”

“They say the Dragonborns have purple eyes and hair… that part matches…”

“Stop it! Teacher Lavinia can never be a Dragonborn! There must be a misunderstanding!”

Obviously, most of the Velmourns couldn’t believe it, especially those who had learned magic from Lavinia. It had only been a few days since they started learning under her, but they had already grown quite reliant on her. After all, her solutions to their questions were simply out of this world. They had gotten too used to it.

But if they were to be told that the magic they were appreciating came from a Dragonborn… they wouldn’t know how to react.

Of course, not every Velmourn had such a reaction—

“See! I have been saying this for hours! I was there at the East Coast, I heard that Drakthar speak! They came here for her! She is a Drakthar criminal!”

A few soldiers spoke up, instantly snapping at the people who had been treating them like fools all this while.

“Teacher Lavinia… is a criminal…?”

“Of course she is! She is a Dragonborn! Every Dragonborn is destined to be a criminal!”

“Then… why are we letting such a person stay with us…? Why not give her to those filthy Drakthars and warn them not to throw their waste here again?”

More and more Velmourns reacted, some even using harsh words that shouldn’t be used—especially for the person they had just hailed as their savior.

Even Kael narrowed his eyes at the scene he was seeing, and the moment they saw it—

“Shut up! Did you not hear!? She is a Drakthar criminal? She is not a criminal—she must have realized the true nature of the Dragonborns and decided to leave them! This is why they call her a criminal!”

“Exactly! She risked her life to protect all of you, and you dare use such words for her! How ungrateful can you lot be!?

Does the salute you did just now even mean something to you!? Or is it just an empty action that you do because everyone else is doing it!?”

The soldiers that fought together with Kael instantly snapped at the people using those words. It almost looked like they were prepared to punch a few of them down, but before things could get out of hand—

“That is enough.”

Morvain spoke up, attracting everyone’s attention.

“Yes, you heard right.”

She said in a flat but clear tone.

“Mage Lavinia is a Dragonborn.

She is the eldest child of Drakthar’s current King, a true royalty with the purest Dragonborn blood.”

She let the words settle for a moment, but this time, since she was speaking, none of the Velmourns interrupted her. The Matriarch held that much power here.

“And before you start thinking like frightened children, listen to me.”

Her eyes swept across the gathered Velmourns.

“She is not Drakthar’s hand here to crush us. As the current situation stands, as disappointing as it is to admit, the Drakthars have no need to send their princess to act as a spy for a force as weak as ours.

Even the little unit of ships they sent today was more than capable of destroying us several times over.

Lavinia Dragonborn is not here as one of Drakthar’s people.

She is ours.”

She pointed toward Lavinia.

“This woman stood on our Wall today when death came for us from the west. She did not run. She fought for you—for our food, for our families.”

A few soldiers shifted uncomfortably, especially those who had been calling her out.

“She is an excellent mage.

Not just good—excellent. The kind of mage who, if she stays with us, can raise Velmourn magic so high that the whole world will think twice before daring to test us.”

Her tone grew sharper.

“And yes, it is true that Drakthar came here today for her, but instead of doing what they want and giving her to them, you should use this moment to think it through.

Would Drakthar come all the way here for a mere criminal? If she were some petty thief or murderer, they’d have been happy to see her rot in the snow.”

Morvain shook her head.

“No.

They came for her because they know exactly what she is worth.

They know the power she can reach.

They know that if the Velmourns keep her, our enemies will have to look at us differently.

They will have to fear us.”

The Matriarch’s voice then hardened—

“That is why they came with ships, with soldiers, even offering us resources that could feed us for years—just to take her away.

Do not forget, Drakthars are our enemies. They would never give us anything that would benefit us. They came here because they cannot bear the thought of her standing here, with us.

They cannot bear the thought of her changing how the entire world sees us.

They know she is very much capable of that. I know she is very capable of that, and I know you know she is capable of that.”

The Matriarch spoke, and… the crowd turned silent.

The mages who had attended Lavinia’s lectures knew it better than anyone. They knew just how skilled Lavinia was.

Within a few days, she had opened up an entirely different world in front of them—a world they desperately wanted to explore under her guidance.

“We will not give them what they want.”

Morvain’s words were like iron.

“We will not trade away someone who has fought for us, risked her life for us, stood with us when she had no reason to. We will not send her to be chained so our enemies can sleep easier at night.”

Morvain straightened, her eyes sweeping over them again.

“The Velmourns have accepted Lavinia as one of ours. And until the last stone of the Velmourn Wall falls, she will remain ours.

That is final.”

Morvain declared; her words left no space for any objections. The Velmourns who met her gaze instinctively lowered their eyes as the Matriarch placed her hand on Lavinia’s shoulder, nodding at her with a reassuring look.

Lavinia nodded back as she turned her gaze towards the Velmourns. She could still see their hesitation, but because of Morvain’s direct orders, she could see that everyone had somewhat accepted her, albeit unwillingly.

Settling in a land where people didn’t accept her willingly…

It felt quite… upsetting.

But…

“…?”

Lavinia’s expression soon changed when Kael grabbed her hand from behind.

Slowly, a small smile appeared on her face as the thought she had in her mind before only got stronger.

People did not matter—only Kael did.

The mage clenched her fists. Once again, a cold, inexpressive look appeared on her face as she glanced at the Velmourns. She tightened her hold around Kael’s hand, and none of the Velmourn gazes bothered her.

“Now listen well, all of you.”

Morvain spoke again. This time, her tone was lighter than before.

“Today, we stood against the east and the west—each capable of letting us fall.

But we did not fall.

We fought. We endured. And we are still standing.

Not just because of Kael and Lavinia—but because all of you did your part.

You held your ground.

You did not break, even when everything felt like it would fall apart.

And tonight… we celebrate that.”

Her voice grew warmer.

“The Heights have known harder days than this. But tonight proves something—that we can survive the worst the world throws at us.

And more than that… we can look to the future with hope.

Because the Velmourns are stronger now than we were this morning.

And tomorrow, we will be even stronger.”

She stepped down from the stone block.

“So tonight, we laugh. We dance. We remember that we are alive.”

There was a heartbeat of silence—and then—

“For the Velmourns!”

She raised her hand and cheered, and the people followed.

“FOR THE VELMOURNS!!!”
